PAYA RUMPUT (18 June 2010) - Southerners Johor emerged as the kingpins of athletics at the Sukan Malaysaia XIII Melaka 2010 when they romped to a hefty nine gold medals following the end of the programme last night at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
Not even the late surge from Terengganu when they grabbed both gold medals in the men and women’s 4x400m relay and also the men’s 4x100m relay late last night could dislodge Johor from finishing at the top of the athletics standings.

Johor showed their pedigree in the sport by winning nine gold medals, four silver and three bronzes as Terengganu had to settle for the second spot with six gold medals, four silver and six bronzes.
Third was hosts Melaka, who also picked up six gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze. While Terengganu dominate most of the track event, Johor were dominant in the field with five gold medals - not including decathlon which was won by Muhd Fahmi Maselan.
Johor won gold in the men and women’s pole vault (Rafiudin Che Omar and Farrah Wahidah), men’s high jump (Nauraj Singh), women’s shot putt (Rahila Othman) and javelin (Muhd Bakri Hamid). The remainder of their three gold medals were from men’s 1,500m (S. Mathialagan), women’s 400m (Nurul Asikin), men’s 800m (S. Mathialagan).

Terengganu on the other hand, were playing catch-up all through the four-day period with some gallant performances to keep off the chase from Melaka. And in the end, they emerged as the second best team in athletics winning the majority of the relay events - the men’s 4x400m, women’s 4x400m, the men’s 4x100m, men’s 400m hurdles, women’s triple jump and also men’s shot putt.
The blue riband short distance produced the new starlet in Melaka’s Nurul Sarah when she totally dominated from start to finish - winning both gold medals in the women’s 100m and also the 200m.
In the men’s 100m, FT’s Syed Aliff crossed the tape first with a time of 10.71sec as Melaka’s Schzuan Ahmad made up for his fourth place finish in this event to take gold in the men’s 200m instead.
But while Pulau Pinang had to be content with the fifth spot overall in athletics with five gold medals, they at least had the satisfaction of writing new the national record in 3,000m steeplechase. Melinda Kaur rewrote her old time of 11:04:14 with the new time of 10:55:31.
