PAYA RUMPUT (18 June 2010) - Southerners Johor emerged as the kingpins of athletics at the Sukan Malaysaia XIII Melaka 2010 when they romped to a hefty nine gold medals following the end of the programme last night at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
Not even the late surge from Terengganu when they grabbed both gold medals in the men and women’s 4x400m relay and also the men’s 4x100m relay late last night could dislodge Johor from finishing at the top of the athletics standings.

Johor showed their pedigree in the sport by winning nine gold medals, four silver and three bronzes as Terengganu had to settle for the second spot with six gold medals, four silver and six bronzes.
Third was hosts Melaka, who also picked up six gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze. While Terengganu dominate most of the track event, Johor were dominant in the field with five gold medals - not including decathlon which was won by Muhd Fahmi Maselan.
Johor won gold in the men and women’s pole vault (Rafiudin Che Omar and Farrah Wahidah), men’s high jump (Nauraj Singh), women’s shot putt (Rahila Othman) and javelin (Muhd Bakri Hamid). The remainder of their three gold medals were from men’s 1,500m (S. Mathialagan), women’s 400m (Nurul Asikin), men’s 800m (S. Mathialagan).

200M Men Final

3000M Lari Berhalangan
Terengganu on the other hand, were playing catch-up all through the four-day period with some gallant performances to keep off the chase from Melaka. And in the end, they emerged as the second best team in athletics winning the majority of the relay events - the men’s 4x400m, women’s 4x400m, the men’s 4x100m, men’s 400m hurdles, women’s triple jump and also men’s shot putt.
The blue riband short distance produced the new starlet in Melaka’s Nurul Sarah when she totally dominated from start to finish - winning both gold medals in the women’s 100m and also the 200m.
In the men’s 100m, FT’s Syed Aliff crossed the tape first with a time of 10.71sec as Melaka’s Schzuan Ahmad made up for his fourth place finish in this event to take gold in the men’s 200m instead.
But while Pulau Pinang had to be content with the fifth spot overall in athletics with five gold medals, they at least had the satisfaction of writing new the national record in 3,000m steeplechase. Melinda Kaur rewrote her old time of 11:04:14 with the new time of 10:55:31.

PAHANG KUASAI LAPANGSASAR

HASSANUL Adzhar Badrin put himself firmly in contention for a ticket to the New Delhi Commonwealth Games with a record-breaking display at the Malaysia Games shooting competition in Ayer Keroh yesterday.
The 19-year-old Pahang shooter won gold in the men's 50m rifle prone individual after posting a personal best of 592 points, which erased the old record of 590 held by Selangor's Wang Wen Chuen since 2000.

It also beat the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 590 but does not guarantee Hassanul an automatic spot as there are three other shooters ahead of him.

"It's my personal best score but I don't know if it's enough to warrant selection. There are two senior shooters who have done better and even the runner-up here has shot a better score before.

"At least it puts me in the frame for selection and if I'm picked, then it would be great to go to my first Commonwealth Games," said Hassanul, who first came to prominence by winning gold at the 2005 Malaysia Games as a 15-year-old.

Johor's Muhly Ibrahim Shah, who had achieved a 593 this year, ended with silver on 588 while Abdul Hanif Ali of Terengganu took bronze on 587.

The team event gold slipped from Hassanul's grasp when Johor scored 1,759 points to beat Pahang (1,747) to gold with Perak earning bronze on 1,742.

Selangor's Amirul Syazwan Shamsuri grabbed gold in the men's 25m standard pistol individual after posting 549 points, missing the Games record by a point, with Negri Sembilan's Jasmi Mohamad Zin (538) and Khairul Azri Roslan (537) settling for silver and bronze respectively.

Pahang won the team gold with 1,596 points while silver and bronze went to Selangor and Johor who scored 1,553 and 1,551 respectively.

Kedah's Wahidah Ismail scored 373 points to win the women's 10m air pistol gold ahead of silver medallist Nabilah Asharza Azlan of Malacca and bronze medallist Stella Han of Sarawak, who both scored 370 but were separated on countback.

Pahang romped to the team gold with a 1,102 total while Sarawak (1,095) and Malacca (1,093) had to be satisfied with the minor medals.

KEJAYAAN ADIK HAZIQ DALAM SUKAN MEMANAH

Archery: Haziq silences two national archers

Haziq Kamaruddin was hopeful of landing a medal at the Malaysia Games but even he could not quite believe it when he beat two national archers to win the men's 50m recurve gold in Durian Tunggal yesterday.

The 17-year-old 'Pelapis' archer from Johor did not just win but also set a new Games record of 333 points in relegating Penang duo Fareez Rosli (331) and Izzuddin Rahim (328) to silver and bronze respectively. Another national archer, Kelantan's Nazrin Aizad Mat Nasir, was shut out of the medals although he recovered later in the evening to win the 30m gold. "It is a rare occasion for me to beat my seniors so I'm very pleased with how it turned out today (yesterday).

I came here looking for a medal from any event, so to have won gold is great. "I believe I've begun to show improvement since making the back-up squad last year and winning this gold medal is my biggest achievement since my win at the Mini-Olympics (in 2008)," said the Skudai-born Haziq, who also won bronze in the 30m. Just as a day earlier, national archers were the big winners with Nazrin also setting a new Games mark of 348 points in the 30m. Sarawak's Lau Jiun Sien fell two points short of the national record in winning the women's compound 30m with 355, although she had to stave off a strong challenge from Sabah's Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh, who ended a point back for silver. Kedah's Zaki Mahazan grabbed the men's 30m compound gold on countback from Zulfadhli Ruslan of Penang with their mark of 354 a new Games record. It was the second time Zulfadhli lost on countback after being pipped to the 50m gold in the morning by Perak's Zulkifli Yusof after finishing level on 340.

Bronze medalist Zulhilmi Abdul Hamid of Perak also scored 340. Johor's Shahira Abdul Halim bagged the women's recurve 50m gold with 317 points before settling for bronze in the 30m which was won by Perak's Ng Sui Kim claimed (341). HOKI LELAKI KECEWA - Malacca send Johor packing in the quarters

MALACCA rose to the occasion to send Johor packing in a quarter-final match of the men’s hockey competition at the Malacca Hockey Stadium yesterday.
Malacca chalked up an impressive 4-1 win over Johor, who were the silver medallists at the last Sukma in Terengganu. They will play against Perak in the semi-finals today.
Perak scored two late goals through Mohd Sabri Mohamed in the 64th and Amir Farid in the 67th minutes to beat Pahang 2-0.
The other semi-final will be between Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
Penang had to ward off strong challenges from Negri Sembilan before winning 2-1 while defending champions KL edged Terengganu 4-3.
Johor have themselves to blame for the defeat as they muffed numerous chances to score. In contrast, Malacca made their chances count, scoring all the four goals from penalty corners.
Mohd Syakir Amir Kamarudin gave Malacca the lead off their second penalty corner in the 23rd minute and Johor equalised with a penalty corner conversion by Baljit Singh Sarjab in the 43rd minute.
Malacca hit back with three more penalty corner goals in a space of 15 minutes.
They regained the lead through Mohd Arifin Dollah in the 46th minute and Syakir went on target in the 59th before Amirullah Zainol sealed the match for Malacca two minutes later.
Although Malacca came away with a convincing win, coach K. Balakrishnan wasn’t too pleased with the way his team played the game.
“The forwards failed to score a single goal while the backline allowed the opponents to create a number of scoring chances,” he added.
Balakrishnan conceded that Malacca would face a difficult task against Perak, who have a well-balanced team.
“I hope that with home ground advantage and support from the fans, we will get the better of Perak,” he said.

KEJAYAAN RIDHUAN DI SUKMA XIII, MELAKA 2010

Shooting: Ridhuan is Johor's top marksman

RIDHUAN Mohamed obliterated an entire field to win the Malaysia Games men's 25m rapid fire pistol individual gold by a massive 19 points at the Malacca City Council range in Ayer Keroh yesterday.

The national shooter from Johor had the gold practically sealed before his sixth and final series of shots and a low 85 only served to extend his lead by another five points for a total of 550, eight short of the Games record. Pahang's Wisnu Awaluddin finished a distant second on 531 with Amirul Syazwan Shamsuri of Selangor settling for bronze a point back. "My main aim was to be consistent in my scoring and the win would take care of itself.

I saw that the other shooters were hitting below the mark and I knew it was mine to lose. "I was not too happy with the low score in the final series but I'm glad I was still able to win my first gold at the Games after three attempts," said Ridhuan, 22. Ridhuan also led Johor to gold in the team event, combining with Azril Amin and Zaidi Muhamad for a 1,540 total to edge Pahang by a mere point.

Selangor claimed bronze on 1,520. "The team gold was a surprise as we are all in the navy and rarely have time to train together.

My teammates are based in Lumut and me in Kuala Lumpur so this win was very satisfying," said Ridhuan. Malacca celebrated their second shooting gold when national record holder Azlan Johari won the men's 10m air rifle event with 585 points while Pahang's Nurrahimin Abdul Halim (583) and Zubair Mohammad of the Federal Territories (581) settled for silver and bronze respectively. Nurrahimin led Pahang to the team gold with a 1,727 total ahead of FT, a point behind, and Perak (1,716). Aina Zahiran, 16, had three perfect series on her way to scoring 594 and a new Games record in the women's 50m rifle prone, bettering the old mark held by Pahang's Nasreena Nazaruddin by nine points. Chee Cia Cia of Sarawak (585) and Nur Farah Afiqah Taufekh of Malacca (580) took silver and bronze respectively while Pahang also set a new Games record of 1,751 in winning the team gold ahead of Malacca (1,732) and Selangor (1,721).
